Parshas Vayeishev recounts the narrative of Yosef's sale by his brothers. As the 'ben zikunim' and the favored child of Yaakov, Yosef is resented by his brothers. The Torah informs us that he would bring negative reports about them to Yaakov, and their animosity towards him intensifies as he recounts his prophetic dreams. The situation escalates when Yaakov instructs Yosef to check on his brothers who are out tending the sheep. During his search, a man (identified by Rashi and the Medrash as Malach Gavriel) encounters him, and he finds Yosef wandering in the field. The man questions him, saying, 'What do you seek?' The Kotzker questions the use of the word 'saying'. Typically, the Torah employs the word 'saying' when the spoken words are intended to be communicated to others. If it is simply a question or statement, the Torah omits 'saying' and quotes the dialogue directly. Thus, why does the Torah use 'saying'?

The Kotzker provides a profoundly insightful response that that carries a vital message. Yosef was on the cusp of moving from the highest of peaks, engaged in study within the Study Hall of Yaakov. His days and nights were filled with spiritual endeavors and holiness. At the young age of 17, he was Yaakov’s principal student, and indeed, he was destined for greatness. Yet, within mere hours, he would find himself plunged into the deepest depths. He was on the brink of being sold into the Land of Egypt, the epicenter of decadence and immorality. The contrast could not have been more pronounced, and the stakes could not have been higher. The Torah utilizes the term ‘saying’ because the Malach was delivering a message to Yosef that he was meant to perpetually repeat to himself. A message of ‘What do you seek?’ The Malach was conveying to Yosef that as he was about to enter this forthcoming chapter of his life, he must keep this question at the forefront of his mind. What do you seek? Will my forthcoming actions aid me in achieving my aspirations, goal and ultimately fulfill my destiny?

Before and During

As one progresses through life, it is advantageous to ponder the question, 'What do you seek?' This question is not limited to the present moment. It pertains to the overarching narrative of life. The enduring philosophical inquiry about human purpose in the world is a crucial consideration that individuals must confront. To be a constructive member of society, one must be aware of what one is striving for and the reasons behind their existence. Therefore, it is crucial for individuals to ascertain their personal goals and aspirations, as well as how these relate to the community and the broader world. Although this is a complex undertaking, if successfully achieved, it can significantly differentiate between a life lived without direction and one that follows a well-defined trajectory towards success.

Benjamin Franklin is often cited for his adage, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." It is imperative for individuals to do everything within their means to avoid finding themselves in unfortunate situations. However, it is not always possible to prevent such occurrences. Additionally, there are instances that one might encounter but fail to prevent. An individual may be thrust into a scenario that has the capacity to disrupt their life entirely either physically, emotionally, or spiritually. The question then becomes, what should one do in such cases? Those who have established a life that revolves around the question of 'what are you seeking?' are better equipped to overcome life's obstacles. They view each part of their journey, including the bumps along the way, with the perspective of how these experiences can aid them in reaching their goals.

While facing an almost insurmountable challenge that is imminent for Yosef, he is provided with the crucial understanding required for triumphing in even the most formidable circumstances. This understanding emphasizes the importance of consistently directing one's attention towards their goals. This serves as a valuable lesson for all individuals. By assessing our lives within the context of "What is it that you seek?", we can better manage our behaviors and responses to the challenges that arise throughout life.
